Zinc Dust

Description

Zinc dust is a fine gray powder of zinc metal, made by distilling primary or secondary zinc in closed, horisontal furnaces. The vapor emitted from the zinc is then directed into large condensers and condensed as dust.

The zinc dust particle size is controlled by the rate of distillation and condensation. The particle size of most zinc dust products is between 2.5 and 8 microns, with a minimum 98% total zinc and a minimum of 94% metal zinc.

Zinc dust is extremely sensitive to moisture, and therefore it is highly recommended to store in a cool, dry place.
It is categorised as a hasardous material.

Applications

  • Chemicals industry – for the production of other chemicals used in the textile and paper industries.
  • Plastics industry – provides hardness and low abrasion to the polyester resin moulds that are used in the production of plastic parts. Zinc dust is also used as a filler to increase impact strength, heat distortion temperature and thermal conductivity.
  • Coatings – used as a component of primer for galvanised steel and for the preparation of zinc rich paints.
  • Lubricants – zinc dust contributes to anti-galling, anti-seizing and sealing of specialty lubricants and sealants, due to its ability to plate out on metal surfaces.
